Pink is the trend colour of summer 2021. But this doesn’t just apply to fashion, because bright pink is also on the rise when it comes to drinks. The so-called pink drink is the new hit of the summer. And the best thing about it? You can easily make it at home, because it’s so easy to prepare.

 

Where does the name Pink Drink come from?

 

There’s hardly any guesswork involved here, because the name “Pink Drink” clearly comes from the bright pink colour of the drink. Although the DIY version of the Pink Drink is very popular on Tiktok, it is actually a Starbucks drink. In the United States, it has been on the Starbucks drinks menu under the name “Pink Coconut Refresha Drink” for a long time, but in Germany it has only recently become available. In the United States, the Pink Drink marks the beginning of summer – similar to the Pumpkin Spice Latte in autumn. The Pink Drink owes its success first and foremost to its appearance, because especially in the hot season pink simply looks great and really puts you in the summer mood. To ensure that your style matches the bright pink drink, wear a colour-coordinated outfit.

 

What’s in the drink?

 

At first glance, it seems as if the Pink Drink consists of various extremely unhealthy ingredients. But on closer inspection, we discover that the ingredients are actually anything but unhealthy and even provide quite a few nutrients and vitamins. Contrary to expectations, the drink contains neither sugar nor cream – the basic ingredients are raspberries, hibiscus tea, elderberry syrup and coconut milk. The special thing about the drink is the hibiscus tea: actually, you could brew it yourself, but fans of the trendy drink rely on ready-made hibiscus tea. Especially the Volvic brand tea is popular – at times it was even sold out. If you order the pink drink at Starbucks, it is additionally refined with acai berries.

 

Is the pink drink vegan or vegetarian?

 

The Pink Drink is vegan and therefore also suitable for vegetarians. It contains no ingredients of animal origin. So you can enjoy the sweet pink pleasure together with all your friends.

 

 

Party-ready: variations with alcohol

 

Pink cocktails existed long before the pink drink became hype. Among the most famous representatives of pink drinks are the Watermelon Martini and the Charleston Pink Lady. Bright pink drinks are so popular because they look great in a cocktail glass and put you in a good mood. You can give your pink drink a cool twist by adding alcohol. Take inspiration from cocktails that contain berries or fruit. You can use classics like the Daiquiri or the Margarita as a template. Spirits that go perfectly with berries and elderberry syrup are vodka and gin. These spirits are neutral in taste and therefore blend harmoniously into any cocktail. Spirits such as rum or a sweet liqueur like Cointreau add a kick of flavour.

The Pink Drink might have remained a delicious drink that is only available at a certain time of year if it hadn’t been for TikTok. The social media platform has made the drink an absolute trend. But is it worth the hype? In any case, the Pink Drink is totally delicious and also healthy – what more could you want? However, you can prepare it yourself without much effort. It is therefore not necessary to visit a Starbucks branch to enjoy the trendy drink to the full.

 

This is how you prepare the hype properly:

 

The cup for your pink drink should be as big as possible. You can use a classic long drink glass or a cool cup made of recycled plastic. Start by filling the cup with crushed ice. Then add berries. Depending on your taste, you can add strawberries, raspberries or blackberries. Remember: the darker the berries, the more intense the colour. However, you should pay attention to the colour component so that your drink does not degenerate into a purple drink. Now fill the cup three-quarters full with the hibiscus tea. You can either brew it yourself or buy it ready-made. If you brew your own hibiscus tea, you should let it cool down first. Finally, add a dash of elderflower syrup and coconut milk to your pink drink. Finally, stir all the ingredients well – and your pink drink is ready.

 

Ingredients for making your own

 

You can also prepare ingredients like hibiscus tea or elderflower syrup for your pink drink yourself. This gives you perfect control over what goes into your drink. Elderflower syrup is versatile and can also be enjoyed as a drink on its own if you mix it with water. For one litre of syrup you need the following ingredients:

One kilo sugar
A cool litre of water
One lemon
10 elderberry blossom stalks
30 g citric acid

The water should be lukewarm so that the sugar can dissolve better. Cut the lemon into slices and put them together with the elderberry and the citric acid into a pot with the sugar water. Stir well and let the mixture sit for 24 hours. Then stir the mixture again and let it sit for a second 24 hours. If you want to make the elderflower syrup for your pink drink yourself, you need to plan ahead, as you will need at least 48 hours to prepare it. Before you can use the elderflower syrup, you need to strain it through a sieve. The syrup is colourless and should not contain any flower residue or other suspended matter.

You can also drink hibiscus tea as it has a whole range of health-promoting properties. Hibiscus tea is often called karkadeh. It is rich in vitamin C and flavonoids. However, the taste is slightly acidic and reminiscent of that of cranberries or red currants. For a cup of hibiscus tea you need about a handful of hibiscus flowers. Pour boiling water over the flowers and steep for about six to eight minutes. Be careful not to exceed this time, otherwise the tea will become too bitter.
